Finally, after years of facial rashes (when I was unaware the cause was nickel allergy) I can finally, confidently wear makeup again!
Today, I'm addressing a topic that often gets overlooked: how to cater to your skincare and makeup routine if you have a nickel allergy.
Many might be surprised to learn that nickel isn't just found in jewellery, metal objects or food; trace amounts can also be present in skincare products and cosmetics. But fret not! With a little guidance, you can still maintain a fabulous and flare-up-free beauty regime.
Understanding Nickel in Skincare & Makeup
Nickel, a trace element, can sometimes make its way into beauty products during the manufacturing process. It can be especially problematic in cosmetics with high pigment content, like certain eyeshadows, or in products packaged in containers with metallic components. The content might be minimal, but for those with a nickel allergy, even these trace amounts can lead to irritation.
Safe Choices for Skincare
Go Organic and Natural: Organic and all-natural skincare products often contain fewer metals. However, always check the ingredient list to ensure they don’t contain natural sources of nickel.
Avoid Metallic Packaging: Packaging can be a hidden source of nickel contamination. Opt for products in plastic, glass, or other non-metal containers.
Patch Test: Before fully integrating a product into your routine, do a patch test. Apply a small amount on your inner arm and monitor for reactions over 24 hours.
Makeup for Nickel-Sensitive Skin
Mineral Makeup: Mineral-based makeup products are often a safe bet. These naturally-derived products tend to steer clear of the additives and fillers that can harbour nickel.
Nickel-Tested Brands: Some brands specifically test their products for nickel content, ensuring that their formulas are below a certain threshold. Look for certifications or mentions on product labelling.
Avoid Green and Gold Shades: Some green and gold eyeshadows can have higher nickel content. If you’re particularly sensitive, it might be best to avoid these shades.
Use Pencil Over Liquid Eyeliners: Liquid eyeliners can sometimes have metallic components in their pigments. Pencil liners, especially those that are mineral-based, are often safer for nickel-sensitive individuals.
What to Steer Clear Of
Certain Eyelash Curlers: Some curlers, especially those with metal components, can contain nickel. Look for hypoallergenic or nickel-free versions.
Low-Quality Makeup Brushes: Brushes with metallic ferrules might have nickel. Opt for high-quality, nickel-free brushes or those with plastic or wooden components.
Exfoliating Products with Metallic Beads: Some exfoliants use metallic beads, which could potentially contain nickel. Always check the ingredient list.
My number one brand I use and recommend is ILIA, a truly amazing skincare range with cleanest ingredients I've come across so far, My personal favourite product is the Super Serum Skin Tint, it's SPF 40 and gives the most natural, dewy finish to my skin. It was a product my sister recommended and I fell in love with it immediately. This skin serum comes in 18 different shades, which is fantastic and you will definitely fine one to match.
A great (free) app I've come across is YUKA, you can essentially use it to scan the barcode of any product and it will give you a safety rating based on harmful ingredients. ILIA scores very highly and I use it before I buy any skincare product, washing liquid and even packaged food. It is fantastic, I Definity recommend downloading it.

Living with a nickel allergy doesn’t mean sacrificing your skincare or makeup routine. It just requires a bit more diligence and research. Always read product labels, do patch tests, and when in doubt, consult with a dermatologist or allergist. With the right knowledge and products, you can achieve a beautiful, glowing look without any unwanted reactions.
Remember, beauty is about feeling good in your skin, and that includes keeping it healthy and happy!
